There are many age old home remedies to control and heal normal seasonal cough and cold. Here, I am just gone discuss some of these remedies.
- Place a thick slice of fresh onion in a cup or small bowl and pour on freshly boiled water. You may like to include a teaspoon of ground black peppercorns. Leave covered to infuse for at least 10 minutes, and drink the liquid whilst it is still warm, you can also eat the onion slice, this drink will help cleanse the airways and reduce congestion. Onion soup is a great food for cold patient especially if you add some fresh garlic and season well with ground black peppercorns delicious! Another popular folk remedy is a poultice of roasted onion applied to the chest every 2 or 3 hours to help remedy a persistent cold. Again raw garlic could be added to increase the potency.
- Drinking hot water regularly is a classical Ayurvedic recommendation for balancing Vata and Kapha dosha, strengthening digestive power, and reducing metabolic waste (Ama) that may have accumulated. To increase the positive effect you can add 1-2 slices of fresh grated ginger (or a pinch of ginger powder) to the water when boiling it. Also add one table spoon of honey to reduce the soreness of your throat.
- It is very much advisable to go for steaming for ease out the breathing problem.
- If you cough persists than consult your doctor. But before that you should try alternative harmless therapies such as homeopathy and herbal medicines specially created for cough and cold. Such as Dabur’s Honitus, Himalaya’s koflet (syrup/tablet), Hamdard’s Joshinda. You can also have the Dabur Sitopaladi Churna with honey to cure cold, cough and flu.
- Use cold balm available in the market. Rub this balm on your back before sleeping. This will help reducing breathing disorders. You can also rub drop of eucalyptus oil on your temples and near nostrils.
- Put drops of sweet almond oil in your nostrils and ear to ease out breathing.
